Trip Preparation List

zipline hikingThe Captain Zipline Lost Canyon Zipline Tour consists of 7 exciting cable rides between 200-700 feet in length and a practice (Bunny Zip) cable that is 80 ft. long. The Bunny Zip is only about 5 feet off the ground, allowing our zipline “trainees” to have their feet on the ground anytime they assume a standing position. The zipline tour cables, however, are stretched over a rocky canyon some 150-200 feet deep.

There are hiking trails between the takeoff and landing platforms; these vary from 40-670 feet long over rocky ground. The trails are not difficult, however guests should be in reasonable physical shape. This adventure has a high “thrill to skill” ratio—it is like bowling or billiards and most anyone can do it, but it takes a little instruction and practice. Ziplines are nothing like roller coasters or bungee jumping. Now they are terrifying!

The tour takes ~2.5 hours and a ½ hour of travel round-trip. Tour duration is longer with larger groups, with those of 20-40 guests taking as long as 4+ hours.

Important Factors before you consider a zip trip:

checkYou must disclose any heart conditions, artificial joints, recent back injury, mental or physical conditions or any other disorder that could compromise your safety as a zipline tour participant. This tour is not safe or appropriate for mentally- or physically-handicapped individuals.

checkOur weight limit depends on body shape since the harnesses must fit comfortably and safely.

• There may be exceptions for very tall people, but generally our maximum weight limit is 250 lbs. for men, 190 lbs. for women. In reality, this rule is a generality and it all comes down to body size, shape, fitness.

• More importantly, the harness must fit our customer’s thighs and waist—the absolute maximum circumference of the upper thigh cannot exceed 24 inches; the waist maximum, measured around the belly button, is 44 inches. The waist dimension must be measured around the belly button and NOT around the hips where men’s jeans are worn, for example. This requirement is for our customer’s comfort as well as safety and we will NOT compromise on this issue.

• If you do not fit into the harness, we cannot accommodate you or refund your trip fee. So please take note of these restrictions. They are there for your safety and protection, our major concern.

checkKids must be at least 7 years old and must weigh at least 55 lbs.; if between 7-12 years old and/or under 100 pounds, they will most likely have to zip with a guide [to add weight so that they can zip across to the other side and/or to provide mental focus to zip safely].

What to Bring:

checkA light jacket

checkA bottle of water for hydration, preferably in a REUSABLE bottle (we will place it in our cooler so that it is available for you at the zipline).

checkCash to tip your guides (a standard recommended tip is $5-$10 per person) and to buy Captain Zipline merchandise (T shirts; other items are in the planning process).

check A camera; one small camera is permissable per group so long as it can  easily be tucked away into a pocket.

checkBug spray, sunscreen. But, please apply before gearing up since these cannot be applied while wearing our harnesses (may degrade the harness material over time).

checkClose-toed shoes (absolutely no sandals)

checkHair ties, for long hair

What NOT to Bring:

• Please do not wear baggy clothes or jewelry.

• Smoking, chewing tobacco, and alcohol are not permitted on the tour or on the grounds.

• Pets. NONE are permitted on the tour or the grounds, even if your pet is an adorable baby wallaby. (Yes, we in fact had such incident.)

• Chewing gum, food, or drinks other than water are not permitted.

• Spectators. Well, this used to be the case. Now that we have a new deck--and in reality, after listening to many, many heart-breaking stories about how much Grandma or Grandpa wanted to watch junior fly across the canyon--we now allow spectators at the zipline! Please be aware, though, that we transport these "observers" in our vehicles, occupying a seat that could have been sold to a full-fare zipline guest, and that we still must ensure the safety of these guests as well as make sure that we adhere to our insurance stipulations...and thus we must  charge a nominal fee of $20 per spectator. Such arrangements are made on a case-by-case basis and ONLY with prior approval by the operator of Captain Zipline or the chief guide.

Payment:

We accept Visa and Mastercard.

A 3% booking fee is applied to all reservations.

Please REPLY to any email correspondence from us by using the “Reply” button rather than generating another separate email. Typically, our email correspondence includes trip notes in the subject line, information that we use to track your reservation.

Release of Liability:

We will need for you to sign a release of liability before embarking on the zip trip. This is done at our meeting place on H Street immediately prior to departure. Kids under 18 must have a parent along and/or a written minor’s release form from our website that is signed by their parent or legal guardian. We can email this form to you.

Meeting Site/Departure:

Customers are either transported by van or car-pooled to the zipline site, depending upon the volume of activity and time of year of the tour. In the past, we had used an open troop carrier for transport, but in an effort to keep our operation’s insurance costs within a reasonable range, we ceased using this vehicle in 2009.

We depart from 331 H Street in Salida.

  • The easiest way to find us to is from Route 50 (Rainbow Boulevard), the only 4-lane highway through Salida. If you are coming from areas west of Salida, you will take a left onto H Street; if coming from the east (Canon City, for ex.), you will take a right onto H Street. Follow H Street almost to where it comes to a dead end--Captain Zipline meeting place will be 1/2 block before the dead end on your right. The office is located in a large white stucco industrial building. Parking is street parking.
  • Alternatively, those arriving from Denver and other areas north of Salida may take 285 South towards Fairplay. There will be a sign for Highway 291 about 8 miles outside of Salida; take a left onto 291 and drive 8 miles into Salida. Once in town, take a Right at the only stoplight and drive about 3 blocks to 4th Street. Take a Right onto 4th Street and drive about 2 blocks to H Street. Go Right onto H Street and look for the Captain Zipline sign to your Right.
  • You can use Mapquest Maps to get the route to the shop. It is imperative that your group check in 30 minutes prior to trip time. We depart no later then 10 mins. past the hour, and even if your dog ate your map and you thus are not present, you will miss the trip and we cannot reschedule or refund your trip fee.

Approximate Travel Times from some major points in Colorado are as follows:

• 2.5 hours from Denver
• 3 hours from the Denver International Airport (DIA)
• 2 hours from Colorado Springs
• 2 hours from Breckenridge.

If you have time to experience additional outdoors activities in and around the “Gem of the Rockies,” you may want to visit the Salida Chamber of Commerce, www.salidachamber.org, or www.salida.com for more information.

We reserve the right to refuse the zip trip to anyone at our discretion. Our experienced staff are the only ones who decide if the trip is postponed or cancelled. We go rain or shine—or snow or blow—and occasionally have to wait out a thunderstorm. If a weather system poses any danger to a tour, we usually postpone the trip a short time and then resume once the threat has moved on.

This is an adventure activity and sometimes the weather does not cooperate to make everything perfect, but it is part of the ADVENTURE. It is part of the excitement of the Colorado Mountains vacation and adds even more to share with your friends and family. We recommend a soak in the hot springs near Nathrop (18 miles north of Salida) at Mount Princeton Hot Springs Resort if you want to rest your weary bones and relax in style after a day of zipping with the Captain.

FREE Zip Line Lesson Plan for Physics and Math
